The 5263's career came to an abupt end on November 13, 1998. An eastbound freight lead by BNSF 741, 8226, and ATSF 5263 rear-ended another eastbound in the Barstow, CA yard, and the 5263 reportedly suffered a bent frame. The unit sat on the ground at Barstow for several months before being formally retired at the end of April 1999. It was the first SDF40-2 to leave the roster. Andy Goodson photo.
