F45 ATSF 5980

An "aft" view of 5980 wearing the short-lived SPSF scheme at Belen, NM in 1987.

By September 9, 1990, units in SPSF paint were getting scarce. There's still an F45 wearing the colors back in the consist, but lead unit 5980 is back in blue and yellow with a small hood unit sized emblem. Photo by Bill Morrison.

On June 13, 1991, 5980 is assisting a late Amtrak Tr. 4 at Albuquerque, NM. With the possible exception of an FP45, they couldn't have picked a better pinch hitter.

5980 was sold to Morrison Knudsen in 1994 and leased back by Santa Fe. By January 2000, the unit was experiencing an identity crisis, with the ersatz markings of both MotivePower (MK's successor) and Santa Fe flanking the cab number.
