In late 1998, the MKM sublettering under the road number and the lack of an air conditioner were the only clues that 5986 was no longer a Santa Fe locomotive. The F45 had been sold to MK in 1994 along with many of its sisters, and was now the property of MK successor Boise Locomotive Company.
