F45 5989

ATSF 5989 was looking sharp as it approached the summit of Cajon Pass in the early 1980's. Note the large nose emblem. Bill Morrison photo.

When F45 5989 was repainted from the red and yellow SPSF "Kodachrome" scheme in the late 1980's, it received a small, "hood unit" size noseband. The stripes are just barely long enough to wrap around the corners of the nose.

Nine years later, 5989 was still on former Santa Fe property, but as an MPEX lease unit. The Santa Fe lettering was gone, but the unit retained its odd noseband.
