The final Atchison Union Depot was typical of Santa Fe depot architecture in the 1950's. It was quite a modest structure compared to the imposing 1890-vintage union depot it replaced in 1954. Following its retirement by the railroad, the depot turned to rubber tired transport, serving for a time as a Ford dealership, and most recently as the Keimig Body Shop. Frank Ellington photographed the depot in 1975. Further east in town, Santa Fe's old stone freight house survives as the Atchison Rail Museum. |
