Berkeley, CA

The classic mission style depot on University Ave. in Berkeley was closed as an agency in 1968. By 1970, the depot had been remodeled and opened as a restaurant called "Depot Steaks." By the 1990's, the "Santa Fe Bar and Grill" was occupying the building. The view at left shows the depot from the "town" side in 1995.
By of April 2000, the building had received a further makeover, virtually hidden by greenery. The former right of way, abandoned since 1979, is barely noticeable in this part of town, but has been converted to a trail beginning a few blocks north of the depot. In 2003, work began to convert the station into part of a new Montessori school. Thanks to Dan Furtado for the April 2000 photo.
