Sitka, KS

The final depots at most towns on the Englewood District dated from the line's construction in 1887, but a handful of "1910-standard" structures were built along the branch in the teens. The final Sitka depot was a textbook post-1910 #1 standard for branch lines built in 1911. Pounds' Santa Fe Depots - The Western Lines indicates that the 16x40 depot was rebuilt into a 16x42 structure in 1932, though exactly what modifications were made and where the extra 2 feet were added is not immediately apparent. The depot was retired in 1961, and ultimately moved to the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, where it keeps company with Santa Fe 2-6-2 #1139. Ken Talbert took the photo at left in 2000 when the depot was undergoing renovations; the above photo from 2003 by Job Luning Prak shows the results.
