GP20 escapees

TP&W GP20 2013

In 1984, Santa Fe swallowed wholey-owned subsidiary Toledo Peoria & Western, a shortline with trackage in Indiana and Illinois. Finding the TP&W's low traffic density not to its liking, Santa Fe spun most of the trackage off in 1989 to a new independent railroad calling itself, of all things, the Toledo Peoria & Western. Santa Fe sold 19 GP20's to the "new" TP&W, including five SPSF-painted units. They were renumbered as follows:

ATSF Number TP&W Number
3019 2012
3063 2019
3068 2013
3073 2006
3074 2001

(for a complete renumbering guide, see Shawn Noe's TP&W Photo Roster)

TP&W repainted a few GP20's into their New York Central-inspired scheme, but many carried their modified Santa Fe colors with small TP&W emblems well into the 1990's, as illustrated by TP&W 2013 above, ex-ATSF 3068. TP&W 2001, ex-ATSF 3074, was used as a parts source and presumably scrapped.

In early 1998, TP&W's new owner, Delaware Otsego Corp., rebuilt GP20 2012 (ex-ATSF 3019) and repainted it into the scheme of the other railroad they own, New York Susquehanna & Western. The unit was lettered for TP&W, but was renumbered to 2050 to avoid conflicts with NYS&W's roster. Red and yellow 2013 became black and yellow 2064 some time later, and the rest of the GP20's were to have followed. The rebuild/repaint program was halted, however, when Delaware Otsego sold the TP&W to RailAmerica in 1999. This left units 2006 and 2019 still in painted-out SPSF red and yellow. They survived in their obsolete colors until 2008 and 2009, respectively, when they were cut up for scrap. The 2006, ex-ATSF 3073, was the last known locomotive still wearing Santa Fe's version of the SPSF scheme.
