Only one rebuilt GP38 made it to the paint shop for SPSF colors: 2312.
Interestingly enough, it was also the first GP38 to be rebuilt, in October 1982. This
overhead view at Belen, NM in 1987 clearly shows that the unit retained its air intake
shields and smoke deflectors, details many EMD units lost when painted red and yellow.
The GP38's also had the distinction of being the only Santa Fe locomotives
that would have retained their old numbers under the proposed SPSF numbering system.
