The GP40X was the experimental precursor to the GP50. Santa Fe owned the largest fleet:
10 units. Two ended up in red and yellow during the SPSF era, but #3803 was repainted
back to blue and yellow soon after the merger denial. The 3805 kept its SPSF colors
somewhat longer - long enough for Steve Emerson to capture the image above. Interestingly,
would-be merger partner Southern Pacific also owned four of these rare units. Unlike Santa Fe's
examples, SP's GP40X's rode on EMD's unique HT-B truck. None of SP's units wore SPSF paint.
