Only two chopnosed GP9's got SPSF colors. GP9 2291, seen here at the far western end of the Santa Fe system at Richmond, CA, is an example. One has to wonder if there would have been enough room on the long hood for the SP initials had the merger gone through. We may never know.
The two GP9's repainted were both "genuine" GP9's, as opposed to the four Santa Fe GP7B's that were upgraded and renumbered among the GP9's when rebuilt. Unit 2250 mounted an all-weather "storm window" on the engineer's side of the cab, 2291 did not.
