Santa Fe SPSF SD39 1573
Click for additional information about SPSF-painted SD39's
Santa Fe rebuilt the SD39's for use as slug mothers for six-axle slugs, but with 20
SD39's and only 11 six-axle slugs, there are always a few spare SD39's. The units earn
their keep in the general freight pool, as evidenced by 1573 climbing
on Cajon Pass (above) or leading a light power move at Pittsburg, CA (below).
Dave Churry caught 1573 and another SD39 apparently working as helpers on Cajon Pass in 1986.
