Santa Fe Captive Cabooses

Last revised: April 25, 2006

Compiled by S. Roger Kirkpatrick,
Site maintained by Evan Werkema.

Santa Fe's fleet of waycars (cabooses) shrank from hundreds of cars in a dozen classes in the mid-1980's to less than one hundred in only two classes (Ce-8 and Ce-11) at the time of the BNSF merger a decade later. The surviving waycars were generally only used in local service as "shoving platforms" - places where crew members could stand and blow the caboose whistle for grade crossings during backup maneuvers. Several of these cars are still exist on BNSF.

The purpose of this list is to track what happened to all of those other waycars. A few were sold to other railroads and continue in service, but many were sold to individuals, communities, businesses, and museums. They became "captive cabooses," more or less permanently mounted in fixed locations. There is no official "master list" of the current locations of former Santa Fe waycars, and the list below is therefore necessarily incomplete. Captive cabooses migrate occasionally, too, as owners decide to sell or move their cars. Updates and additions to the information presented below is both encouraged and appreciated.

Please Note!

We are not used equipment dealers, and have no cabooses for sale! Cars are marked as "FOR SALE" below only to indicate that they may be moved soon or have already been moved. Our location information on those cars is likely to be out of date.

Guide to Identifying "Anonymous" Cabooses

Roger Kirkpatrick offers some tips for finding the number and former railroad owner of repainted cabooses.
