...and unrebuilt Ce-class cars in the 999900-999979 series |

The Ce-5 class cars were refurbished but not significantly upgraded from standard all-steel cabooses. They were intended for transfer service in Kansas City and elsewhere. The work was done at Topeka and Kansas City in the early 70's. The cars retained their original 4-digit numbers initially, but in 1976, they and the surviving unrebuilt standard cabooses were renumbered into the 999900-999979 series. The unrebuilt cars had been designated as "Ce" class cars in 1973. A few cars received the standard Santa Fe Indian red caboose scheme with large yellow emblem, but others received the bright red scheme modeled by Ce class 999961 above. This scheme usually included a badly oversprayed white Santa Fe emblem. The Ce's and Ce-5's were finally purged from the roster in 1982. The 999961 was purchased by an individual and moved, along with the depot from Whiteface, TX, to a location near Smyer, TX on the branch to Bledsoe. |
