  • Small steam generator section at rear of carbody with horizontal ribs.
  • Flexicoil trucks (widely spaced holes in sideframes)
  • Access doors with porthole windows
  • Pointed nose door
  • Flat, sloping pilot (98 had a plow pilot added in the early 90's)

  • Large steam generator section at rear of carbody, with plated over access doors and vents.
  • HT-C trucks (groups of three holes in sideframes)
  • Access doors without porthole windows
  • Flat nose door
  • Silencer housing around exhaust stack (high profile on 5251 and 5255, lower profile on the others)
  • Plow pilot
  • Notches in nose around front stepwells (post 1989 only).
