Santa Fe did indeed allow helpers to shove on the caboose. A pair of 4-axle EMD's put 999524's aged frame to the test as they help a train over Cajon Pass in 1986. Jeff Schultz photo.

Four years later, the well-photographed car was nearly at the end of its service life. ATSF 999524 was condemned at Wellington, KS 16 days after this June 26, 1990 photo. The car was sold and moved to at site in King City, MO, where as of May, 1998, it was reportedly still wearing weathered SPSF paint! Evan Werkema photo.
